Workbench - Fallout Miniatures

I've debated doing posts like this for ages, ever since I saw similar post on From The Warp. It's nothing fancy but the hassle of getting the Nikon out, importing and editing made it so I never got around to do it.

I've solve this with my new iPad, the photo quality is acceptable for simple work in progress pictures and it's quite easy to post straight from the device.

As the Independent Characters podcast hobby challenge is now officially over, I found myself needing a palette cleanser sort of, something different than wall to wall Flesh Tearers. So I decided to finish my Fallout Miniatures.

Terrain - Battlescape and Moonscape

I've made some progress on painting terrain as a nice break from the Flesh Tearers, the Hobby Progress Challenge didn't gave me much chance to paint something else.

Moonscape

I've used the same colour scheme as my bases mostly, here's the link. I did try cheaper acrylics from Mickael's to colour match the Scorched Brown with mixed success. Games Workshop Citadel paint are pretty expensive but I can't say that they're not higher quality than the acrylics I can locally buy (Vallejo and Privater Press aren't distributed around here). The coverage of the Citadel Base paint is way better and dried 10x times faster, I even had to use my heat gun on low setting in order to emulate the same drying times.

Hobby Progress Challenge - August Commitment

Since all that's left are vehicles, I'll airbrush the lot of them at the same time.

Brother Vinni's "Sandlot" miniatures - Assembly

I've assemble them and I gotta say the assembly process is pretty similar to assembling Finecast except I really felt like I had to pin almost everything, especially the arms. Not a big deal and really half the issues I had might have been related to how old my super glue was.

I recommend washing before assembly to be sure to remove any casting agents and get a clean basecoat later on.

I've provided some reference to help emphasis how compatible those miniatures are with standard heroic 28mm scale terrain. If Brother Vinni's would offer more posable options and weapons, I'd think they would do great count-as for Imperial Guard storm troopers or inquisitorial henchmen's.

Hobby Progress Challenge - June Completed

I've struggled with the red on those two, I can't say I'm fully happy with the result. The khorne red was applyed with the airbrush but the color was too bright thus my need to wash. I might have needed to use more dish soap to break the surface tension a little more. I'll need to figure out a mix of khorne red and some brown to pull off a true dark red on the august commitments.

Hobby Progress Challenge - April Completed

For some reasons, my previous commitment post didn't automatically publish on the required date so please excuse the goal and completion being posted back to back.

Flesh Tearers Assault Squad WIP

I'm still needing to base and apply decals, two aspect I don't think are required for the challenge, the only requirement I see is three colours minimum, which is quite easy to obtain. I'll probably base and add Flesh Tearers decals on all my models prior to the end of the challenge.

Hobby Progress Challenge - March goal progression

Here the progress I've managed to accomplish since the beginning of the month, I'm still very busy from the move to the new house but things are starting to settle down. I forgot how long Death Company is to paint as every model is almost as detailled as an HQ model.

I'm gonna try working with more subtile highlights than the ones I've previously painted, I like the look on the tabletop but on camera the lack of blending does show.

Alien scum from Commoragh sighted

I've managed to convince my girlfriend to get into the hobby and strangely it was the Dark Eldars who caught her eye. It's probably a mix of strong esthethics and the pirate theme that made them appeal to her.

I gotta say, their kits are awesome but they aren't for hobby novices. You have to be careful about cuting them from the sprues, cleaning the pieces and handling them in general. They are quite delicate and less forgiving than say a tactical space marine. You get why they are toughness 3 every time you handle one.

Expect updates as I get to experiment with the painting scheme she has carefully chosen.

Hobby Progress - Terminators and Sternguard

I've done quite a bit of progress on my terminators, getting the entire squad to the same point, leaving only basing and decals to be applied.

My sternguards weren't high priority as I don't field them often but since I had previously finished the armour, only the detailing paint steps need to be done which once I get painting should be done quickly.

Sternguard "Sergeant"

They are all converted with warrior of chaos cloaks and they all have Black Templars helmets, Forge World bolters and some have Black Templars tabards. They were converted to stand out from the rest of my army and get a bit of my own fluff into the army. Flesh Tearers Sternguards should be veterans from many campaigns in order to make sense fluff wise in an aggressive assault army, so I made mine as veterans of the Armageddon campaigns were they would have earned honours from Black Termplars as for me they should be their closest battle-brothers outside of the Blood Angels.

Hobby Progress - Terminator Sergeant

I've manage to do little in terms of painting but I did manage to crank out my assault terminator sergeant as a test model for the rest of the squad.

Flesh Tearers Assault Terminator Sergeant

I've use the same technique mentionned in a White Dwarf army workshop article about Flesh Tearers, where the black in the color scheme was to draw the eye in. It's in part why I think the Death Company models are so striking, they're loaded with details and the black armour only emphasis them, besides the black being awesome on his own right.

Time to get busy on the rest of the squad...

Hobby Progress - Objective Markers and Sanguinary Priest

I've managed to bring the objective marker to close as being totally done as I can right now. It needs to be sealed and I haven't figured out my options as there's no hobby shop providing any nearby.

Hobby Progress - Objective Markers and Terminator

I've progressed on the objective markers, had issues with getting the banner right but I think it worked out. I think I've got my basing technique figured out (described here) so I should be able to blast through them rather quickly.

Terrain - Minefield

Warhammer 40k 6th edition introduced the concept of dynamic battlefields, either through random effect terrain or simply the sheer amount of possibilities that the battlefield debris allows. I've been working lately on a minefield and to keep it dynamic, it's dimensions aren't static since each pieces are on a standard infantry round base.

Hobby Progress - Death Company and Ultramarines ... !?!

Ultramarine Captain Work-in-progressAn Ultramarine ? have I left the harsh conditions of Cretacia for the hope of greener pastures on Maccrage ? Let's not be silly shall we, it's simply objective markers time !

Objective markers for me should be set pieces that tells a small narrative, while being quite basic, will contribute to the cinematic aspect of your games.

The idea behind those two markers are meant to illustrate the duality of the Flesh Tearers, they are space marine who serves the will of the Imperium but the rage they suffer sometimes blends the line between friends and foe as they are consumed by the visions of their dying primarch.

I often play with an Ultramarines player either as an ally or a foe, so selecting the chapter was an easy choice, being the poster boys of 40k didn't hurt either.

The first one is an heroic last stand versus overwhelming odds. The restriction of the 40mm base is to my benefit here as it's suggesting that the models are forced to be close together, implying the fact that they would be surrounded.

The second one showcase an Ultramarine trying to report with his dying breaths the massacre of his squad by the Flesh Tearers.
Ultramarine tactical marine mutilated on objective 40mm base
Once painted, the scene will be quite gruesome. You can see the entrails if you zoom.

In both cases, my forces have a reason to rush forward to those points. One to save Battle-Brothers, one to keep the incident far from the eyes of the Inquisition. The backpack flags will boost up the visibility of the markers without distracting with the intent of the set piece.

Here's something more subtentiel as far as painting goes. I'm really liking how the one of the far left came out. I must also prepare my winter of painting by finding the motivation to prime everything before it's too late.
